Initiating Bengaluru's Transformative
Suburban Rail Project

Played a pivotal role in bringing The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) to fruition for the city by advocating for it in parliament, maintaining consistent follow-ups with the government. The long-cherished dream of Bengaluru was realized when the Union government sanctioned the suburban rail project in October 2020. The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) stands as a crucial initiative, promising to alleviate congestion and enhance travel efficiency in the city.

Project Overview

The Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE) is implementing the transformative Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). This initiative, approved for construction by the Indian Government in October 2020 with an estimated cost of Rs. 15,767 crores, aims to link the heart of the city to its suburbs, satellite townships, and surrounding rural areas through a 149.348 km commuter rail network with 64 stations. RITES prepared the project’s feasibility report and final detailed project report, suggesting four lines/corridors. On June 20, 2022, Bengaluru’s four-decade-old dream took a significant step towards
becoming a reality as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone. The BSRP is expected to reach a maximum speed of 90 kmph and operate at a speed of 35 kmph. The project aims to provide air- conditioned, metro-like trains that offer an affordable, speedier, safer, and more comfortable mode of rail travel.

Enhancing rural-urban connectivity, easing traffic congestion, and offering a cleaner mobility solution to lakhs of daily commuters are key objectives. Upon completion, the project is poised to facilitate the daily commute of over 10 lakh passengers, significantly enhancing their daily work routines and livelihoods.

Affordable fares will be a hallmark of the BSRP, providing an economic alternative for lakhs of daily commuters. Covering a route length of 149.348 km, the project will be constructed at a total cost of Rs. 15,767 crores through a combination of project financing and land monetization. The integration of multiple modes of transport will offer a convergent transit solution to commuters, with more than 60% of its stations allowing passengers to interchange with other modes of transport such as Indian Railways and the Namma Metro network. The project will establish 57 new stations, hosting a wide spectrum of commercial activities.
